Why do you need my services?

You want your project to have the best possible impact on your intended reader but it is very difficult to identify problems in your own work. The material is too familiar and you will see what you expect to be there rather than what is actually there. I can look at your work with fresh, objective eyes.

Your computer will have a spelling checker and this can be helpful. However, it will not highlight words that are spelt correctly but are not the words you want. For example, if you mean to write 'the world' but type 'the word', the spelling checker will ignore this.

The grammar checker will often offer unhelpful suggestions! Neither can it help with phraseology that is correct but not what you mean. To illustrate this point, both the following sentences are correct but have rather different meanings.

He had shot, himself, as a boy.

He had shot himself as a boy.

However, there is more to proofreading than just correcting typos, spelling, grammar and punctuation, important though these are. The content of the material is at least as significant and I always proofread with this very much in mind.

What services can I provide?

I can help you to ensure your hard work makes the best possible impression on your readership by checking it for:

  • typographical, spelling, grammatical and punctuation errors
  • consistency and appropriateness of language and style
  • clarity, coherence and continuity
  • factual accuracy

I can undertake research to check the content and where necessary I can suggest rewording to overcome any problems.

I am British but I am experienced in working with American English.
